Goldbach’s Conjecture about the Part of Watch

From 1729 to 1764, during these thirty-five years, Goldbach and Euler have always kept in touch with each other by correspondence.

On 7 June, 1742, the Prussian mathematician Christian Goldbach wrote a letter to Leohard Euler in which he proposed the following conjecture. He wrote: “My question is this: take a high-end watch, such as the extremely complex IWC watch, how many parts does it have?” Euler wrote back: “I have no way to prove this proposition.” Thus, well-known Goldbach conjecture was born. Of course, this is a joke. However, how many parts are there in a watch in the end?

Here, we will talk about the parts of movement of a complex watch.

Omega hour vision

backOmega Hour Vision
Known: Omega hour vision
Proof: 202 parts
Prove: In order to enhance brand existing patent – Co-Axial escapement technology, Omega took five years to develop the 8500 movement. The co-axial escapement system which wad born in 1999 is studied by the British watch-making masters Dr. George Daniels. This development can reduce friction of escapement system components and energy consumption. With free sprung-balance hairspring, even the movement move for a very long time, it is still accurate and stable. This device makes the watch almost no need to add lube. The new Hour Vision watch is equipped with this movement.

The release of the highly anticipated Omega Hour Vision is a pleasure. The design of Hour Vision Series design is unique and innovative, which are also elegant classic. Its innovative new element – the sapphire glass walled case – can be seen clearly when the watch is held up close to the eye. Apart from this new design detail, the watch is a well made classic three-hand watch. Its open exhibition back shows off a movement that is better finished then the regular lines from Omega. This is evidence that Omega is making a serious effort to break into the higher end of the luxury watch market.

20090921-cartier-rotonde-central-chronograph-watchRotonde De Cartier Chronographe Central
Known: Rotonde de Cartier chronographe central
Proof: 272 parts
Prove: The primary distinguishing feature of this new Rotonde de Cartier 9907 MC calibre watch is the isolated chronograph display in the centre of the dial. This ingenious arrangement offers both exceptional legibility of this traditional complication and a novel way of displaying the time. Timekeeping occurs on two levels: the lower level is devoted to displaying the hours and minutes using blued hands which are invisible save for the tips, while the upper level is dedicated to the chronograph function. In the centre, the slim blued seconds hand begins to move when the corresponding push-piece is pressed, while the large counter in the form of an arc records each of its revolutions up to thirty minutes. Thus, the hands indicating the time never obscure those of the chronograph. The central chronograph counter is held as if weightless above the dial by a sapphire ring, whose discreet presence adds to the complexity of this construction, for which a patent request has been registered.

Compared to its more conventional equivalent, it thus has three crucial advantages:
• It renders the usual braking and blocking levers, used to keep the various elements of the chronograph display in position after measurement, superfluous.
• It allows the chronograph hand to advance smoothly from the very beginning of time measurement and to move with perfect regularity according to the rhythm dictated by the vibrations of the balance, i.e. in eight little steps per second on the 9907 MC calibre. The precision of the chronometric function is thus improved.
• Activating or deactivating the chronograph only has a very marginal effect on the amplitude of the balance. Such an original function thus enables Cartier to forgo the small seconds. The control is then assured by the chronograph hand, which can remain permanently in motion.
